Jack White - Love Interruption

I haven't always been a huge Jack White fan, but his first single "Love Interruption" off his new album Blunderbuss is great. It comes out April 23/24. It's pretty different from "Sixteen Saltines," the other song off the forthcoming album he played as musical guest at SNL.

I actually first heard about this because my beautiful, amazing friend Claire sent it to me and it was set as the soundtrack to a video of all Don Draper's ladies from Season 4 of Mad Men in anticipation of the Season 5 premiere on Sunday. The video is great. The lovely lady is Ruby Amanfu from Sam & Ruby.

Pink pants

{Sweater: J. Crew (old, similar to this); Long sleeve tee: Banana Republic; Capris: J. Crew; Heels: Zara (old); Jewelry: Michael Kors, J. Crew, David Aubrey from Fuchsia}

My new bright fuchsia pants from J. Crew, which I think are still available on sale. After a couple of sneaky nice days, the weather has been terrible again, so I've been resorting to wearing bright colors as the only sign of spring.

Marcus Foster - I Was Broken

I heard about this song first because Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame is in the music video, but I've actually become quite fond of it.

He has also just started an American tour, and I'm seeing him here in Portland at Mississippi Studios, one of my favorite venues in town.

Weekend Brunch

{Jacket: Old Navy (old, similar to this); Sweater: J. Crew (old, similar to this); Jeans: Red Engine from Tumbleweed: Heels: Urban Outfitters; Sunglasses: Kate Spade (old, similar to these); Jewelry: Harlow from Fuchsia, Michael Kors, J. Crew}

Just a quick post of an easy weekend outfit for a late brunch. Layered, comfortable neutrals with a pop of color via my red/orange suede heels.

Edited to Add: Also, just a quick note, my favorite jewelry store is having a Spring Fling tonight and tomorrow, from 5-9, so if you're in Portland you should stop by!

Delta Spirit - California

I spent a solid month listening to their previous song Bushwick Blues on repeat. They have a new album coming out today, which you can listen to on their website.

They're also touring now.

Nneka - My Home

I just went to the Nneka concert last night at the Doug Fir Lounge, and she is great live. She has funny and easy dialogue with the audience and provides some background for her songs. Her tour is still going on through April.

"My Home" is the first single off her most recent album. There's a good review of the album, Soul is Heavy, here.

Fashion Inspiration - Head to Toe

I've been noticing a lot of matching suits or separates in recent street style photos, whether in a solid color or pattern, and think it's an interesting continuation of monochromatic dressing. While many of these looks certainly pack a punch, I've been struggling with trying to decide if something similar would be too much for everyday.

Here are some of my most recent favorites:

Lady Danville - Better Side

Their latest EP "Operating" came out on Valentine's day this year, and they just released their music video for "Better Side" on February 28th. I also really like their song "Operating."

They aren't touring right now, but they have a blog they keep up pretty regularly, so any news should pop up there.

Emergency Meal

After reading this post a couple of years ago about making an effort, I like to think I've been trying to improve my food presentation. Even if I haven't cooked anything all that special, it lends some ceremony to transfer it into serving dishes.

However, I probably enjoyed even more the reference to emergency meals. Defined by Rachel as:
*An emergency meal is what you eat when you arrive home from work and you are dying. Ideally, an emergency meal should provide actual sustenance (pickles, though tempting, do not work well), should not require heating or chopping and must be able to be eaten with a single utensil or your fingers.

I have been thinking about what my emergency meal is, and ironically, it includes pickles - usually at least one of several varieties always in the fridge. While I like to think my emergency meal is a riff on a ploughman's lunch (which I learned about from this photo), it is probably closer to a bologna roll-up.

My emergency meal is salami, smeared with cream cheese, usually with a few pickles, and sometimes an apple. It only requires one utensil (a butter knife), and I usually don't assemble a bunch before digging in - I stand at the butcher block and eat as I go. I almost always have all on hand for exactly this purpose - the dying that will inevitably occur if I'm not able to eat something immediately upon walking in the door. My current favorite pickle is the okra pickle pictured above - in hot (of course) - which they sell at my local grocery store.

I'll have to try the peanut butter with chocolate chips next time I'm in need of an emergency meal.
